Uruguay Perdiz Hunting

Upland Hunting Uruguay

Often times, the high volume dove and duck hunting in Uruguay gets all of the press, and one of Uruguay’s best wingshooting venues—Uruguay Perdiz Hunting—gets overlooked.  Perdiz hunting in Uruguay has long been a wingshooting tradition long before anyone ever contemplated shooting ducks or doves in Uruguay.

For a long time, the best Perdiz hunting Uruguay had to offer was a closely held secret that was only enjoyed by local landowners, their families, and their closest friends. During that time, the Perdiz hunting was not very well regulated by the authorities, and like any country, anywhere in the world, overshooting became a problem.

Fortunately, the division of Fauna enacted laws to limit the amount of Perdiz one could harvest each day, and began to patrol the areas and enforce the limits. Nowadays, both the authorities and the landowners police themselves and the population of birds is steady, and healthy. Indeed, Uruguay Perdiz hunting is flourishing, and at no other time in history are more shooters coming to Uruguay to enjoy the great opportunities that exist for hunting these birds.

Now it is your turn to go Perdiz hunting in Uruguay! This is a trip that is guaranteed to satisfy, mainly because every respectable wingshot reaches their limit of ten birds—usually in the first hour or two. The walking is easy, and there are no cacti or thorns to contend with—nor are there any poisonous snakes.

Uruguay Perdiz Hunting - Los Gauchos Outfitters

One of the most important things to keep in mind about Uruguay Perdiz hunting is the fact that you are hunting in a country that is very small—roughly the size of the state of Washington. By comparison, Argentina is much larger, and has many more total birds than Uruguay.  However, hunting those birds is another story…Argentina does not police the overshooting of Perdiz, and as a result, many of the locals overshoot the Perdiz (many shoot them on the sides of the road with BB guns) for dinner table subsistence.  This has a very negative effect on the bird population, and makes life tougher for professional bird hunting outfitters in Argentina.

By contrast, the police in Uruguay do a very diligent job of stopping the locals from shooting off of the roads, and the farms in Uruguay are much larger on average than those found in Argentina. Because the farms are large, and the landowners who own then are wealthy, professional hunting outfitters do not have an easy time getting access to the land. This is a good thing, and it keeps the bird population safe from overshooting.

It is for this reason that the best Perdiz hunting Uruguay has to offer is still in the days to come, whereas Argentina’s might well be in the rear view mirror, with no recovery in sight anytime soon—if ever.
